Astronomically, Ketu and Rahu denote the points of intersection of the paths of ‘the Earth around the Sun’ and ‘the Moon around the Earth’ as they move on the celestial sphere. Therefore, Rahu and Ketu are respectively called the north and the south lunar nodes.

Ketu is the descending lunar node and as per a legend is said to be the body of an Asura (demon) after its head was cut off by God Vishnu.
