In ancient time, there was a Brahman. He has seven sons and daughter-in-laws. In the month of Shrawan, six daughter-in-laws went to there maternal places with their brothers. The seventh one had no brother, so no one has come to take her to her maternal place. She was very disappointed. In that mind of state she remembered Sheshnag (Snake) as a brother. By knowing this, Sheshnag came to her in a form of old Brahman.
He took the seventh daughter in-law along with him. After reaching away from home, Sheshnaage changed into his original form of snake. He took her to the snake’s world. She stayed there very happily. After sometime, many small snakes born at Sheshnag’s place. Accidentally, one snake was injured by her. She came back to her in-laws place after sometime.
Next year, when Shrawan month returned, again other 6 in-laws of old Brahman went back to her maternal place. This time Sheshnag didn’t come to take her along with him. However, she remembered the Sheshnag and worshiped the snake with Diya and flowers.
As, accidentally one snake was injured by her other snakes were very angry with them. They all came to her place for revenge. But, they they all found her worshiping the snakes and offering milk to snakes. By watching this, all the snakes became happy.
They all promised that who so ever will offer milk on the day of Shrawan Shukla’s Panchami to the snakes, all snakes will defend that person forever as a brother.
