A long time ago, there lived a gorgeous girl by the name of Veeravati. She was the only sister of her seven caring brothers, who was wedded to a king. On the juncture of the first Karva Chauth after her wedding, she went to her parents’ home. After sunrise, she observed a strict fast. Though, the queen couldn’t stand the rigors of fasting and was eagerly waiting for the moon to rise.
The seven brothers, who respected her dearly, were very disturbed watching the sorrow of their sister and decided to end her fast by misleading her. Then the brothers reflected a mirror with the help of Pipal tree leaves. The sister, taken it as moon rise and broke the fast and took food. However, the moment the queen ate her dinner, she got the news that her husband, the king, was seriously sick.

The queen went to her husband’s palace and she met Lord Shiva and his consort, Goddess Parvati on the way. Parvati informed her that the king had died as the queen had broken her fast by seeing a false moon. However, when the queen asked her for clemency, the goddess given her the boon that the king would be revived. But in order to achieve this, she would have to observe the Karva Chauth fast by following all rituals then only her husband would be revived. Tradition of Karva Chauth
A married woman who observes this fast is called ‘Saubhagyavati’ (joyous and happy state of wifehood). “Let the donations of this Karva (Karak (gift carry long life to my husband and may my saubhagya be everlasting”). And express such wish that ‘May my death precedes that of my husband so that I can enter the chitaa (funeral pyre) as a bride (not as a widow).

In the late afternoon, women assemble at a common place like shrine or a garden or someone’s’ place who has prearranged the pooja. An elderly lady or the pujarin read the legend of Karva Chauth. In the afternoon, mothers of newly wedded girls give ‘Baya’ to the parents of their son-in-law. This Baya contains few Mathris, Almonds, and gifts. The Vrat is broken once the moon is sighted and rituals of the day have been executed. At night when the moon appears, women break their Vrat after giving water to the moon.
This festival is quite famous among the newlyweds. A few days before the occasion, markets are full of items required for the festival. The preparations for this carnival start before a week in advance. Karva Chauth is performed mostly amongst the entire North Indian society settled either in India and other parts of the world.

Essentials of Karva Chauth 2022
The essentials of this meeting and listening of the Karva chauth tale, a special mud pot is considered as a symbol of lord Ganesha, a metal urn filled with water, flowers, statues of Ambika Gaur Mata, Goddess Parwati and some fruits, mathi and food stuff. They pray for the shelter, success and long life of their husbands. If the husband is present, then worship him with Panchopchar or gandh, pushpa, dhoop, deep and naivedya (perfume, flower, incense, lamp and food). If the husband is away on travels, then offer a prayer to Almighty to grant longevity to their husband. Thereafter bring the fast to its conclusion.
