Feng Shui and its Importance

Feng Shui and its ImportanceFeng Shui is pronounced as “fungschway”.It is a Chinese system which enables one to live in harmony with oneself, others and with nature. The words Feng and Shui mean wind and water respectively.

Origin of Feng Shui

The origin of the term Feng Shui is believed to have come from the Jin Dynasty (265BC-420BC). In the Burial Book by GuoPu, the energy called ‘Chi’ is mentioned to ride wind and stop at the boundary created by the water.

Different Approaches to Feng Shui

In order to connect to the energy, soul and feel of a place there are three different approaches to Feng Shui.

The Environmental Approach: In early ages people depended on local environmental conditions. They selected places for living depending upon the availability of their basic requirements of food, water and shelter. A mountain in the background would protect from winds. A river will give water for drinking, irrigation and other purposes. So this earliest branch of Feng Shui which was based on environmental knowledge was known as the Landform School.

The Compass Approach: This branch of Feng Shui is most prevalent today. It uses a magnetic compass known as Luo Pan which not only gives directions, but also analyses the energy associated with each direction.

This branch of Feng Shui is based on the ancient Chinese book called ‘I Ching’ or the book of changes. Its origin goes back even to the era before 551 BC.

This great book interprets the universal energies in 64 images and these form the outer ring of Luo Pan. The wisdom of ancient sages has been added onto the Luo Pan so it allows us to connect to nature.

The Intuitive Approach: This branch was based on intuitive feelings or instinct about certain places which are considered good for dwelling. Ancient text of ‘The Water Dragon Classic’ gives information on the best places to construct. Instinct guided people to believe that a site protected by mountains in the background and having healthy water sources was good for living.

Since a dragon is a symbol of good fortune so a dragon shape mountain near a city gives protection and prosperity to the dwellers.

Importance of Feng Shui

Feng Shui being a universal system can be utilized by people of all cultures and beliefs.

Feng Shui can benefit all those who realise the influence of surroundings on them and wish to improve their lives.

The believers and followers of Feng Shuibecome more aware of their surroundings and by changing certain factors gain a still deeper insight into life and themselves.

Environment:The external as well as the internal environment of our place of living affects us profoundly.

Each one of us feels the impact of the surroundings in day today life. Imagine yourself sitting in a hospital; you sense an air of pain, fear and uncertainty? If you have ever visited an old hallowed temple do you remember how you felt, you felt relaxed and peaceful and full of high spirits.

Living in a place which is cluttered and improperly furnished may cause discomfort and restlessness. And on the other hand spending time in a tastefully furnished, neat and clean placeis so much relaxing and enjoyable.

The art and science of Feng Shui ensure proper flow of energy in a place and its positive effects, irrespective of individual taste and liking.

Prosperity: The art and science of Feng Shui focuses on free flow of ‘Chi’ inside as well as outside our bodies. When the furnishings inside a house allow smooth and gentle flow of chi, the people living there enjoy good health, happiness and prosperity. Corners and dead spots in a building, where chi does not circulate freely, get filled with negative vibrations. Improper or blocked flow of Chi in a work place can pull down business and create disharmony in the environment.

In any workplace, where Chi flows freely and in correct path, the employees are happy, productive and thus prosperity and progress is gained.
